A department dedicated to heart transplants and innovative cardiac surgery procedures, led by Dr. Claudio Marra, has been inaugurated at Monaldi Hospital in Naples. In 2026, 16 transplants were performed in the first nine months, with five in the final month; a total of 60 transplants were performed from 2024 to September 2026. The facility serves as a hub for advanced heart failure and cardiogenic shock.

Claudio Marra Head of the Adult Transplant Program
At Naples' Monaldi Hospital, a department dedicated to heart transplants and innovative cardiac surgery procedures, led by Dr. Claudio Marra, was unveiled. The new facility is designed to support complex heart patients throughout all phases of the process, from transplant preparation to post-operative care.
The department, located on the hospital's fourth floor, includes a dedicated operating room, a six-bed intensive care unit with two isolation beds, and six sub-intensive care beds in single rooms. The equipment and pressure gradients allow for targeted monitoring of immunosuppressed or infected patients, supporting a continuous care pathway.
Sixteen heart transplants in the first nine months of 2026, five of which occurred in the last month, consolidate Monaldi's position as a hub for advanced heart failure and cardiogenic shock. The hospital has performed 60 adult heart transplants from 2024 to September 2026. The hospital also leads the Campania region among public facilities in terms of the volume of valvuloplasty and isolated valve replacement procedures, according to data from the National Outcomes Program (PNE).
As part of the treatment pathways, advanced heart failure surgery procedures are also managed, intended for centers with experience in ventricular assist devices and heart transplants.
The new organization allows patients to be followed through the various stages of the transplant process within dedicated spaces, consistent with the National Transplant Network model. The new department represents an investment in the quality and safety of care and further strengthens Monaldi's vocation in highly complex cardiac surgery and transplantation.
, declared Anna Iervolino, general director of the Colli Hospital.
We provide dedicated spaces for professionals and patients, along with an organization capable of supporting them through every stage of a delicate process like transplantation. Facilities, technology, and expertise must work together: this is the model we intend to continue investing in to offer citizens increasingly high-quality care.
