Mondragone: Asbestos dumped in fields near the market: seizure triggered.

An abandoned and deteriorated pile of asbestos cement, with some of the material now crumbling and partially reduced to dust, was discovered on a farm in Mondragone, a short distance from the fruit and vegetable market.

The Caserta Provincial Police, coordinated by Colonel Biagio Chiariello, intervened, conducting local checks to combat environmental crimes. The area was immediately cordoned off and placed under seizure, with the seals placed.

The material abandoned in the agricultural land

According to initial investigations, the material found consisted of asbestos cement sheets and fragments, in conditions that required special attention due to the possible dispersion of fibres into the environment.

The property is jointly owned by four people. Investigators have conducted the necessary investigations and collected some evidence deemed useful for reconstructing the origin and manner of abandonment of the material.

Further investigations will now establish any responsibilities and clarify how long the material had been in the area.

The Prosecutor's Office was informed

The Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere was informed of the intervention, and the evidence gathered during the inspection was forwarded to them.

At the same time, the competent authorities were notified of the need to proceed with the safety and subsequent remediation of the site, according to the procedures established for the presence of materials containing asbestos.

Controls against environmental crimes

The seizure is part of the Provincial Police's efforts to combat environmental crimes in the province of Caserta, with particular attention to the areas most affected by the phenomenon of waste abandonment and illegal disposal.

In recent days, checks have been carried out in several municipalities in the Caserta area, including Casal di Principe, Villa di Briano, Castel Volturno, Aversa, and Capua, where further operations, seizures, and investigations have been carried out.

The goal is not only to identify those responsible for the abandonment, but also to prevent situations of potential environmental risk by monitoring the land and peripheral areas.
