Naples – The mayors of Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Quarto, and Monte di Procida will be in Rome tomorrow to participate in the demonstration organized by citizens' committees on bradyseism. Luigi Manzoni, Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, Antonio Sabino, and Salvatore Scotto di Santolo expressed their appreciation for Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi's announcement that the new decree on the Phlegraean Fields will be submitted to the Council of Ministers—probably next Tuesday.
"The Minister of the Interior's words are certainly welcomed, as are the reassurances we received yesterday at the Prefecture from the President of the Region, Roberto Fico, the Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, and the Prefect, Michele Di Bari," the four mayors declared.
"We have long reiterated that bradyseism is not a political issue, much less a point of contention," the mayors explained. "Our commitment has always been exclusively focused on providing solutions to citizens in need. This is why we will be in Rome tomorrow: we believe it is right to stand alongside our fellow citizens to further strengthen their voices in a demonstration that aims to be absolutely peaceful and proactive."
In Rome, they emphasize, "we will only ask that the decree be effective, that it provide answers to displaced people, citizens, and businesses, that it be capable of initiating a process of securing all buildings, public and private, and that it initiate those strategic structural and infrastructural works, which can no longer wait."
Among the priorities indicated by the mayors is the stabilization of municipal employees hired in the last three years: "We need more staff," they specify. "In this spirit, on this basis, we are ready to pursue every form of institutional dialogue, at all levels, from the government to the region, which also involves the territories and citizens and leads to a shared solution to complex problems."
"The Phlegraean Fields are a fragile area of our country, certainly not the only one," the four mayors continued. "Therefore, we believe that the issue of coexistence with natural phenomena, with risk management for Italy's vulnerable municipalities, is a national, not a local, issue that must concern citizens throughout our country."
"For this challenge to be met, the contents of this new decree must respond to the real needs of our communities and our territories," they conclude, "and we are confident that with a united commitment from all sides, these objectives can be achieved. Tomorrow we will be in Rome to reiterate this."
Tomorrow's demonstration in Rome will involve citizens, committees, associations, and unions, departing this morning from Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Quarto, and Monte di Procida. The goal is to bring the protest to government buildings and secure a citizen delegation meeting with the executive branch. The new decree, already announced by Minister Nello Musumeci, is expected to include the amendments left out of the previous measure.
