The Campi Flegrei committees are preparing a mobilization and have announced a demonstration in Rome for Thursday, October 8th. The goal is to directly address the demands of a community that, the organizers say, has been waiting for years for concrete answers to the emergency situation in the area.
"The institutional policy responses in recent years have been completely inadequate," the committees state. The conditions in Pozzuoli and the entire Phlegraean Fields are in focus: "Incredibly, Pozzuoli still lacks a hub, half of the applicants have been denied repair funds, the number of damaged buildings is increasing, and the danger is increasing."
According to the promoters, the critical issues also concern the measures enacted in recent years. "The Campi Flegrei decrees have proven inadequate across the board: timeframes, procedures, and objectives for addressing the problems of the Campi Flegrei," they argue.
According to the committees, tensions were further heightened by the recent rejection of the amendments proposed by the local authorities. "A few days ago, we became aware of absolute indifference: all the amendments proposed by the local authorities were rejected. Now, time is up."
The mobilization also stems from the difficulties experienced in recent months. "The city of Pozzuoli has experienced two months of enormous difficulty, but also of great cohesion and courage," the committees explain, recalling the numerous initiatives organized by residents: "Not a single week has gone by without the residents of Pozzuoli and the Campi Flegrei taking to the streets."
The demands on the table cover a variety of areas: dignified accommodations for displaced persons, seismic retrofitting of buildings, support for businesses, workers, and the most vulnerable, guaranteed public services, and land safety.
For October 8th, the appeal is addressed to the entire Phlegraean Fields area. "We will be in Rome, taking our voice to the government buildings. We won't do it as a delegation, but we are appealing to the entire city: unions, associations, committees, mayors, and municipal administrations."
Buses are scheduled to depart from Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Bagnoli, Quarto, and Monte di Procida. The stated goal is to transform the protest into a collective mobilization to demand action to ensure greater safety for the population.
"The time has come for the entire Phlegraean city to mobilize and demand that everything necessary be done to ensure safe living in this area," the committees conclude.
On the institutional front, the government has announced a further decree. The organizers of the event, however, ask that any new measures take into account requests coming directly from the local community: "Whatever regulatory instruments national and local institutions wish to implement, they must first listen to the voice of Pozzuoli and the Campi Flegrei."
