Tragedy narrowly avoided in San Marco Evangelista, police rescued four people from a building fire.
Yesterday afternoon, the State Police responded to a fire in San Marco Evangelista, in the province of Caserta, in a residential building where several people were trapped. Officers from the Maddaloni Police Station's Flying Squad, dispatched by the Police Headquarters Operations Room, reached the building as a thick column of black smoke rose from the building and the flames spread rapidly.
After crossing the fence, the officers heard cries for help coming from inside and reached the landing of an apartment completely filled with smoke. There, they rescued a young woman and her two-year-old daughter, who was found semi-conscious due to smoke fumes. The mother and daughter were taken outside and entrusted to the care of 118 emergency medical personnel.
After rescuing the woman and child, officers returned to the building to check for other occupants. In a second apartment, they located and evacuated two other residents trapped by smoke and flames. In total, four people were rescued.
Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze, along with emergency medical services, who provided first aid to those involved. Initial investigations suggest the fire was caused by a short circuit in the building's basement.
