The location where worker Salvatore Calignano was found
Naples – A dramatic sequence of still-unclear details surrounds the death of Salvatore Calignano, the 61-year-old construction worker who died at Naples' Ospedale del Mare from severe injuries sustained after a fall from a height. What initially appeared to be a roadside medical emergency is now evolving, hour by hour, into the possibility of yet another fatal workplace accident, marred by uncertainties surrounding rescue operations and contractual discrepancies.
The events date back to the early afternoon of last Friday. Around 3:00 PM, an ambulance responded to Via Fossa del Lupo, a remote area in the municipality of Caivano, following a call for help. On site, paramedics found Calignano in desperate condition, suffering from severe multiple trauma. Before finally losing consciousness, the man was only able to tell medics that he had injured himself falling from a ladder.
Subsequent investigations conducted by the Carabinieri of the Giugliano in Campania Company revealed that a few hours earlier, around 13:00 PM, the 61-year-old had called his wife, explaining that he was on the roof of a warehouse, also in Caivano, installing insulation. The man's car was later found near that industrial facility. Investigators suspect that the accident occurred within the construction site and that the injured worker was subsequently moved and left on a side street to avoid immediate inspections at the workplace.
Complicating the situation is the victim's employment status. According to preliminary investigations, Calignano had been employed regularly since October 1st, the day before the tragedy. This timing is considered highly unusual by the family and their lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi.
His wife, Carmela, clarified that her husband had been receiving unemployment benefits in September and was occasionally working illegally, without ever mentioning any recent employment contract. "The circumstance of a hiring agreement finalized immediately before the tragic event seems strange to us," stated attorney Petruzzi. "We have serious doubts about this legalization, and it will be up to the investigation to fully shed light on the matter."
Desperate and seeking answers, the victim's wife demands a no-holds-barred explanation: "If it's true that he was abandoned on the street, I want justice for my husband. He didn't deserve to be treated like this," said the woman, who raised two daughters with Salvatore.
The North Naples Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to shed light on the exact circumstances of the death. The magistrate on duty has ordered an autopsy on the 61-year-old's body and ordered the seizure of his cell phone. Investigators are cross-referencing phone records and conducting technical tests to first identify the person who made the 118 call, a crucial piece of evidence to reconstruct the crucial minutes between the fall from the roof and the arrival of the ambulance.
