The Parco Sommerso di Gaiola Marine Protected Area wins the ASDOMAR competition. It is the most loved marine protected area in Italy. The contest was launched in May by the premium brand of Generale Conserve specialized in the production of canned fish together with an exceptional partner such as SEAC, an Italian company leader in the scuba diving sector. Voting has now closed with the victory of the environmental archaeological park located in the heart of Naples, in Posillipo. There were 29 Marine Protected Areas - established by the Ministry of the Environment - candidates to win, thanks to the vote of users on the social network Facebook, both the title of most loved marine area in Italy and the donation of 23.000 euros. The winner above all was the small Marine Protected Area "Parco Sommerso di Gaiola" in the Gulf of Naples, a treasure chest of biodiversity and history nestled along the coast of Posillipo a few steps from the city center. An area that in the 80s began a slow decline that lasted about thirty years and that since 2002 - thanks to the establishment of the Marine Protected Area Parco Sommerso di Gaiola, and the birth of the Centro Studi Interdisciplinari Gaiola onlus - has begun its enhancement process, allowing the rebirth of this immense naturalistic and archaeological heritage. "The Gaiola area, although a symbolic place of the Neapolitan coast full of history and suggestions, before the establishment of the Park was in a state of degradation and abandonment. This victory represents a beautiful testimony of affection and esteem from the citizens, and not only, for the great work of protection and redevelopment of the area carried out in recent years by the Park", commented Maurizio Simeone, marine ecologist and President of the Centro Studi Interdisciplinari Gaiola that manages the marine protected area. "We are proud to be able to contribute concretely to the support of the Marine Protected Area of Parco Sommerso di Gaiola, a true jewel of our marine ecosystem. This activity fits perfectly with the values of the company, which has always been active in respecting the environment and safeguarding the sea and the species that populate it,” says Giovanni Battista Valsecchi, General Manager of Generale Conserve.
