Sarno. The mayor of Sarno Giuseppe Canfora has ordered the evacuation of residents of the piedmont area as a precaution. The measure, which was taken at 9 am, is affecting approximately 200 people. The decision was made in light of what happened on Sunday night, when the streets of the historic center were invaded by mud and debris that came down from the slope of Mount Saretto, devastated by a fire last September 20. The citizens living in the area affected by the order (via Pietro Nocera, vicolo Orefice, via Mortaro and adjacent alleys, vicolo San Martino, vicolo Tre Corone) have already left their homes: some have gone to the premises of the Baccelli institute in via Matteotti where a reception center has been set up, while another part has been hosted by family members or friends. The measure will remain in force for the entire duration of the weather alert: the latest warning issued by the regional Civil Protection, in fact, reported an orange criticality and the worsening of weather conditions with heavy thunderstorms starting at 12 today and for the next twenty-four hours. "I am close to my fellow citizens, children, the elderly, the disabled. I am close to you first as a man and, then, as mayor" are the words that the mayor of Sarno, Giuseppe Canfora, entrusted to his Facebook profile. "Our history has taught us not to underestimate certain situations, to initiate all the necessary precautionary measures. Unfortunately, the fire in September has made our territory even more fragile. A criminal, despicable act, which I will not stop condemning in every possible place, because it is against our city that has paid with the lives of 137 people for the devastation to the environment" said the mayor, recalling both the tragic flood that in May 1998 hit the city of Agro Nocerino Sarnese and what happened last September 20 when the Saretto hill was devastated by a fire - started by a group of kids - that destroyed over twenty hectares.
