December 3rd “International Day of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities” for an inclusive use of archaeological sites
The Archaeological Park of Pompeii on the occasion of the "International Day of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" scheduled for December 3, intends, through a series of initiatives, to underline and promote the importance of access to cultural heritage according to the principles of maximum inclusion of each citizen, without limitations or distinctions.
Already in 2016, Pompeii was among the first archaeological sites to introduce the “Pompeii for all” route, dedicated to people with motor difficulties. Unlike in the past, when the possibility of visiting the site in a wheelchair was limited to the areas near the amphitheater, the “Pompeii for all” route, over 3km long, today allows you to cross the entire archaeological city from the entrance of Piazza Anfiteatro to Porta Marina, with access to the main buildings.
The itinerary has been traveled on several occasions by some exceptional testimonials who have left their video testimonies and their advice. Danilo Ragona and Luca Paiardi of Progetto Viaggio Italia, who have recounted their various travel experiences in the column “Viaggiatori in Carrozza” on Kilimangiaro di RaiTre and Maria Venditti, active in the world of social innovation, cooperation and associations, and in particular in the promotion of the rights of people with disabilities in the FISH Onlus network. She collaborates with ItaliAccessibile, a blog committed to the issues of accessibility related to the world of tourism, culture and sport.
Thanks to the adaptation of other buildings, the “Pompeii for all” itinerary will be further extended and it will be possible for visitors with disabilities to get to know other places, with a view to the widest possible inclusion.
Furthermore, the Park, within the framework of the Protocol Campania tra le mani. Inclusive itineraries in places of art, coordinated by the University Service for the Activities of Students with Disabilities of the Suor Orsola Benincasa University, which includes numerous institutions of cultural heritage in Campania and the major associations of people with disabilities, is activating a series of actions aimed at ensuring the use of the park by disabled visitors, with particular attention to people with sensory disabilities.
For this purpose, a video story of the house of Venus was created, and in particular of the fresco that gives its name to the house. The text of the narration was created with the supervision of the FIADDA Campania association, while the audio recording was edited by the National Center of the Talking Book named after Francesco Fratta, on the initiative of the President of the National Union of the Blind, Mario Barbato. The narrator's voice leads the user to the discovery of the fresco, through an audio and a visual language that is able to reach anyone with maximum immediacy, overcoming the various sensorial limitations. This first experimental video will be part of a series of video stories that will also deal with other places, frescoes and/or finds from the archaeological sites of the Park.
With the same aim of expanding knowledge of the site, through digital channels, especially in this moment of difficulty in enjoying museums and places of culture in person, the Archaeological Park has produced a series of videos with Italian subtitles, with the hope of making understanding more immediate for people with hearing difficulties. Among these new initiatives is the column "Along the streets of Pompeii", which will illustrate the main buildings of Pompeii, through the story of a guide, with the collaboration of CoopCulture as part of the educational activities of the Park.
All videos will be available from December 3rd on the website www.pompeiisites.org and on the Park's social channels.
