New Year's Eve with heat and fog, the 'African Giant' arrives: May heat in the mountains and in the Center-South, suffocating fog in the Po Valley
In the next few days and at least until after New Year's, a gigantic high pressure figure coming from the African continent will hit Italy. This will start a period of atmospheric stability, but above all of temperatures decidedly out of the ordinary for the end of December.
The team at www.iLMeteo.it reports that starting tomorrow, Thursday 30, the entire country will be protected by the African anticyclone, but its presence will have different effects depending on the area.
Usually, this meteorological figure keeps us company during the summer, but this year it has decided to exaggerate, managing to rise in latitude precisely in what should be the coldest period of the year with deviations from the climatic average of +12/15 C, with values therefore in the hills and mountains more similar to the spring season and decidedly anomalous.
The presence of high pressure in the winter season is not a guarantee of good weather and sunshine everywhere. If our star will have no problem shining on the central and southern regions and on the Alpine sectors, it will not be the same on the Po Valley and the Apennine valleys; in these areas the compression of the air favored by high pressure will cause the formation of widespread fog or low clouds that will make the days gray and gloomy.
The presence of fog will unfortunately favor the accumulation of smog in the lower layers with consequent worsening of the air quality especially around the large urban areas and not only: maximum attention in cities such as Milan, Turin, Bologna and Padua.
We are already starting to see “highly polluted” conditions with repercussions on our health: the risk of upper respiratory tract diseases should not be underestimated (especially in fragile people such as children and the elderly). From a thermal perspective, the values will rise above the average by just over 10 C.
During the day, in many cities in Central and Southern Italy such as Florence, Rome, Naples, Bari, Palermo and Cagliari, temperatures could reach 16-20 C, while up to 15 C could be reached in the Alpine valleys, such as in Trentino, Lombardy and Piedmont. Things will be different where fog and low clouds will be the protagonists; in these areas, during the day, temperatures will not even exceed 9 degrees.
