Vassallo Foundation, the “SalvaMare” Law dedicated to the Fisherman Mayor Angelo Vassallo
"The Salvamare law has been approved, the first in Italy directly aimed at protecting our sea and freshwater bodies and reintroducing waste recovered in these ecosystems into the production cycle. Adding Angelo Vassallo's name to the 'SalvaMare' law is something that makes us proud of the work that the Foundation has been carrying out for 11 years, 7 months and 29 days". This is what the brother of Mayor Pescatore and President of the Dario Vassallo Foundation says.
A fisherman first, and then Mayor of the Municipality of Pollica, Angelo Vassallo has dedicated his entire life to protecting the sea and the environment, through a series of initiatives that, even today, continue to exist and expand throughout the world thanks to the incessant work that the Foundation carries out and promotes, such as the protection of the protected sea lily and the cleaning of the seabed from microplastic pollution.
“I truly thank all the political forces that allowed the approval of this law, promoted in 2018 by the then Minister Costa. It shows that, if you network, then what may seem pure madness, an almost utopian and unachievable idea, can become State Law. The next step will now be to make this rule law for the entire Mediterranean, to share a pioneering project”, continues Dario Vassallo.
Thus, the dream of the fisherman mayor of a Cilento attentive to the environment and free from the presence of organized crime regains momentum: an aspiration which someone tried to put an "end" on a summer night about 12 years ago, with 9 gunshots that interrupted the life of the mayor who became the symbol of legality and protection of the sea.
“My brother Angelo often said that 'true wealth is the place where you live', it is up to us to protect it with all the tools possible – continues Dario Vassallo – This law marks an important step forward in the fight against marine pollution from plastics and waste. Fishermen who recover plastic waste at sea or in fresh water will be rewarded; they will no longer be forced to throw it back into the water, to avoid being reported for illegal waste trafficking, but they will be able to bring it to port, to promote its disposal and recycling.
This law would have been appreciated by a sea lover like Mayor Angelo Vassallo. We are certain that all political forces will agree with us in wanting to dedicate this law to him who has done so much for the protection of the marine ecosystem and for the education of citizens on the correct management of waste and respect for the environment”.
“A recognition – concludes Vassallo – important of the State therefore, in memory of the environmentalist mayor who became the symbol of the fight against illegality and the protection of the sea and the environment.
