Known as "u' siccu" (the skinny one) or Diabolik, among the instigators of numerous murders, the attacks against judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, and the murder of young Giuseppe Di Matteo, the son of the informer who was strangled and dissolved in acid after nearly two years in prison: after 30 years on the run, Matteo Messina Denaro – the last ringleader of the massacre and guardian of the secrets of the negotiations between the state and the mafia in the 1990s – was arrested yesterday in a raid by the Carabinieri of the ROS (Special Operations Squad) right at his home in Sicily, in a private clinic in Palermo where he was receiving treatment.
