4 Tons of Hashish Seized at Civitavecchia Port

Finance police from the Rome Provincial Command and the State Police, with the assistance of officials from the Customs and Monopolies Agency, intercepted approximately 4 tons of hashish at the port of Civitavecchia.

The personnel of the State Police and the Guardia di Finanza of the Civitavecchia Group, with the help of the drug-sniffing dog “Losna” and together with officials of the local Customs Office, discovered – hidden inside an articulated lorry coming from Barcelona – 8 pallets containing thousands of packages of hashish.

The driver of the vehicle, a 65-year-old Italian, was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. The substance, divided into cellophane packages, was hidden in the bottom of the trailer compartment of a truck that was officially transporting a load of bar supplies.

The seized hashish, once it reached the drug dealing areas, would have generated illicit profits of approximately 30 million euros. The operation is part of the broader and more synergic device to combat illicit trafficking implemented in ports and airports by the Guardia di Finanza, the State Police and the Customs and Monopolies Agency.
