These data were collected by Vamonos-VACANZE.it, a tour operator specializing in single travel, through a survey commissioned by the Ircm Research Institute (www.ircm-ricerca.com).
Other data reveal that Rome is in 32nd place with 275 reports, Milan in 30th with 282 reports, Naples in 86th with 126 reports, Turin in 25th with 267 reports, Palermo in 121st with 108 reports, Genoa in 79th with 149 reports, Bologna in 5th place with 357 reports, Florence in 10th with 337 reports, Bari in 74th with 159 reports, Catania in 90th with 110 reports, Verona in 25th with 290 reports and Venice in 11th with 335 reports.
The IRCM research highlights a growing concern among Italians regarding this problem: 83,5% of those interviewed (+5% compared to 2023) consider home burglaries a priority issue when planning trips.
In particular, 82% of men (+7,9% compared to 2023) and 85% of women (+2,4% compared to 2023) declare themselves worried.
However, 66,5% (-4,3% compared to 2023) believe they can take adequate measures to prevent thefts during their holidays: 68% of men (-2,1% compared to 2023) and 65% of women (-5,8% compared to 2023). Only 15% of men (+3,8% compared to 2023) and 15% of women (+100% compared to 2023) actually fear being robbed.
The security measures adopted by Italians include: 24% will rely on friends, family or neighbors to check on the house during the holidays (-36,8% compared to 2023), 45% will use alarm systems or video surveillance (+50% compared to 2023) and 21% will opt for armored doors, iron shutters or bars (+31,3% compared to 2023). Seven percent will continue to use methods such as leaving a light, radio or TV on, even though this is considered the least effective method.
Advice and precautions
Vamonos-VACANZE.it also recommends a series of precautions to leave with peace of mind, summarized in a "hexalogue":
1)Avoid announcing your departure on social media to avoid attracting the attention of ill-intentioned people.
2)Load your suitcases away from prying eyes, preferably in a covered place or at quieter times.
3)Equip yourself with a video surveillance system, even a simple and inexpensive one, to monitor your home in real time.
4)Avoid signs of prolonged absence, such as piled up mail or neglected plants, by asking trusted people to take care of these details.
5)Entrust your house keys only to people you absolutely trust and do not leave them in easily accessible places.
6)Do not leave jewelry or money at home, preferring a safe deposit box at the bank and maintaining discretion with such assets.
