Yesterday, during my speech in Turin at the National Assembly of the Italian Municipality of Italy (ANCI), I shared my experience as President of the Campania Regional Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), representing the 550 municipalities in our region. I spoke about the success of the "Be Wise, Drive Safely" project, which has become an Italian best practice over the years.
I have underlined that minimal, almost non-existent funds are foreseen for road safety. For cities and traffic moderation there is not even a reminder in the PNRR. For road safety there are only crumbs with 1,6 billion, despite the hard lesson of thousands of deaths and injuries per year. A budget that should make every public administrator reflect. I then spoke of Caserta which from 80 thousand residents is transformed into a center of 160 thousand with tourists and commuters, the challenge of sustainability becomes urgent and must be faced with great promptness and institutional character.
The goal is to prevent thousands of people from pouring into our cities on polluting private vehicles, ensuring everyone's safety but at the same time continuing on the path of sustainability. The PNRR provides 7,5 billion for investments in mobility for all Italian cities and they are really insufficient to make a change and improve local transport, and for the renewal of the rolling stock. A great Italian plan for sustainable transport is needed and I believe that this point should be among the first of President Manfredi's agendas for the Municipalities to present to the Government.
