Cumana at risk of three-month stop between Bagnoli and Torregaveta due to sinkhole in Pozzuoli

Rehabilitation work on the Cumana line, interrupted by a sinkhole discovered under the tracks, is expected to take a long time. Shuttle trains and replacement buses are planned between Bagnoli and Torregaveta.

The Ente Autonomo Volturno has announced that the interventions could take up to three months. During a recent meeting with the mayors of Pozzuoli and Bacoli, it emerged that the sinkhole, discovered on December 24 and of considerable size, requires special attention. It is a cavity 4.5 meters deep and at least four meters wide, probably attributable to a disused sewer system.

Possible Solutions

The summit discussed two possible solutions: the first involves work to safely restore the current route, while the second considers the accelerated completion of a new route already at an advanced stage. Both options involve a construction time of one to three months. In the meantime, stopgap solutions are being studied, including train shuttles between different stations and replacement buses to facilitate transportation in the area.

The company is also considering strengthening the bus service on the Torregaveta-Licola route , to ensure more efficient connections for those who need to travel to Bacoli.
