Naples, Cumana section reopening expected by February 18

Naples – The Cumana railway line, closed since December 24th due to a sinkhole under the tracks near the Pozzuoli station, will reopen on February 18th.

The announcement came this morning from EAV , the company responsible for public transport in Campania, which communicated the completion of the adaptation work on a new tunnel between Gerolomini and Arco Felice.

The sinkhole, which had caused the suspension of service on Christmas Eve, prompted EAV to accelerate the completion of the new tunnel, bypassing the Pozzuoli station and thus guaranteeing service to Torregaveta.

The work was officially completed on Friday, February 7, after which the pre-operation phase began, with dedicated trains repeatedly running along the new stretch to verify its safety and efficiency.

“To allow the reopening of passenger service, all that remains is to grant the qualifications to the train drivers and conductors,” the company said in a statement. According to Ansfisa regulations, this process includes not only running the line but also a certification exam. “We expect to reach 70% of the personnel qualified by February 18 in order to resume passenger service by that date by completing the 'on job' qualifications,” Eav added.
