The most iconic gulf in the Mediterranean becomes the stage for the America's Cup 2027, the oldest sporting competition in the world. The sea of Naples will host the regattas between the spring and summer of that year, and with them an unprecedented relaunch project for the city. The estimated impact is one billion euros, according to what was declared by the Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi during the official presentation held at Castel dell'Ovo, in front of the two historic cups - the Louis Vuitton and the America's Cup - displayed on the terrace overlooking the sea.
“We will not spend, we will invest”, Abodi underlined, describing the enthusiasm of the Emirates Team New Zealand team for the Neapolitan choice. The project is intertwined with the redevelopment of the former Italsider area of Bagnoli, a symbol of broken promises for years. The America's Cup will be the trigger: “We acted as a defibrillator, Bagnoli's heart started beating again” the minister declared.
There will not be a new extraordinary commissioner for the event: Mayor Gaetano Manfredi will receive additional powers. Manfredi, who is already commissioner for the reclamation of Bagnoli, confirmed the imminent start of the interventions: “As soon as the decree is passed, we will leave the next day.” Among the hypotheses is also the establishment of a free zone to attract private capital through significant tax breaks.
Naples is experiencing a new sporting renaissance. After the celebration for the Scudetto, the city is now preparing to take on the role of the world capital of sailing. “At the end of the intervention Bagnoli will be beautiful” promised Manfredi, speaking of public access to the sea, large green spaces, new services and tourism transformed into a permanent engine. The works will not be limited to the competition area: the coast will be redeveloped from Pietrarsa to Bagnoli.
From the terrace of Castel dell'Ovo, where the cups shine in the May sun, the vision is clear: Naples will be the protagonist of a global event, but above all of a real change. For the president of Sport and Health Marco Mezzaroma “this is not just a sporting event, it also has enormous social value”. Grant Dalton, head of the New Zealand team, stressed the importance of sustainability, confirming the long-term commitment and admiration for the city. “We won’t stop at 2027”, he promised.
