Naples – Eight precautionary measures, including one arrest in prison and seven under house arrest, were carried out by the Metropolitan Police of Naples as part of the second phase of an investigation coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office of Naples North.
The operation involved public officials from several municipalities in the area north of the Neapolitan capital, accused of having facilitated the release of citizenships fictitious Italians.
The investigation, launched by the Aversa Public Prosecutor's Office, had already involved employees of the Municipality of Villaricca. According to what emerged, the officials had granted citizenship to Brazilian citizens - including footballers and television hosts - falsely certifying their descent from Italian ancestors who never existed and attributing them fictitious registered residences in Italy.
A fraudulent system based on the abuse of the principle of ius sanguinis, used to obtain Italian passports illegitimately.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the network and the number of citizenships unduly issued.
