Napoli – The heat wave that is hitting Campania these days shows no signs of abating. The regional Civil Protection has extended the criticality warning for “heat waves” until 20:00 pm on Saturday 5 July, due to temperatures above the seasonal average of over 6,7°C, with humidity peaks that, in the evening and night hours along the coastal strip, could exceed 70%.
To make matters worse, there is an almost total lack of ventilation, which contributes to increasing the perception of heat and thermal stress on the body.
Tips for protecting yourself from the heat
The regional authorities renew their invitation to the entire population, and in particular to the most vulnerable categories – the elderly, children, people with chronic diseases or disabilities – to adopt prudent behaviors to reduce health risks.
Here are the main recommendations:
Avoid going out during the hottest hours of the day, especially between 11am and 18pm.
Limit outdoor physical activity, especially strenuous activity.
Avoid direct sunlight without protection and seek shade if you are outdoors.
Drink water frequently, even when you are not thirsty, to maintain proper hydration.
Eat light meals, rich in fruit and vegetables.
Ventilate rooms during the cooler hours and darken windows exposed to the sun.
Pay attention to pets, making sure they always have fresh water and a shaded place.
Attention to the most fragile
The Civil Protection bulletin also urges municipalities, local health authorities and social care facilities to keep surveillance procedures active, ensuring adequate assistance to citizens most at risk. Particular attention should be paid to elderly people who are alone, who often do not perceive the sense of thirst, and to people with cardiovascular or respiratory problems.
The toll-free numbers of local health authorities remain active to report emergency situations or request support, as well as the initiatives promoted by associations and volunteers, including the opening of refrigerated centers and home services for those who cannot travel.
In anticipation of a possible drop in temperatures in the coming days, the authorities urge all citizens to be extremely cautious. The heat emergency, in fact, should not be underestimated: heat stroke and dehydration can have serious consequences, especially in the weakest segments of the population.
