Mantua-based professional charged with €15 scam: four people charged with cyber fraud

Mantua – A professional from Mantua fell victim to a sophisticated cyber scam, losing over €15 to a Postal Police scam orchestrated via deceptive text messages and phone calls.

Four men, all residents of the province of Naples, have been reported by the Postal Police for computer fraud, thanks to an investigation that led to the recovery of part of the stolen money. The scam: a fake police officer.

It all started with a text message apparently sent from "Poste Info," reporting an alleged fraudulent transfer of €980 to the victim's account. Shortly thereafter, the woman was contacted by phone by a self-proclaimed police officer, who convincingly persuaded her that her account was at risk.

Following the caller's instructions, the professional carried out a series of financial transactions—including Postepay top-ups, bank transfers, and Money top-ups—transferring the funds to accounts labeled as "safe." In reality, the money ended up directly in the hands of the scammers.

The victim's prompt reporting of the incident allowed the Mantua Postal Police, in collaboration with Poste Italiane and the banks involved, to block several transfers, preventing the loss of over 9 euros.

Investigations conducted by the Cyber Security Operations Section led to the identification of the four perpetrators, all from the province of Naples, who have now been charged with cyber fraud.

The incident, which highlights the audacity and complexity of online fraud, has prompted the Italian State Police to reiterate their call for caution. "No bank, Poste Italiane, or police force contacts citizens to request codes, personal data, or financial transactions," the authorities emphasize.

Experts urge people to always verify the authenticity of messages and calls, avoiding providing sensitive information or making money transfers under pressure. This latest case of cyber fraud, which affected a professional in the quiet province of Mantua, underscores the importance of maintaining high levels of vigilance against the dangers of the internet.

Investigations are continuing to determine any possible connections to other similar scams, while the victim, despite having recovered part of her money, remains shaken by the experience. The Postal Police urges anyone receiving suspicious messages to report them immediately, to combat a worryingly growing criminal phenomenon.
