The man, who arrived in critical condition with signs of paralysis, has fully recovered his motor functions, demonstrating the quality and timeliness of the island's healthcare system.

When the 75-year-old arrived at the emergency room, his condition was desperate: his left side was paralyzed, he was slurred speech, and his lips were deviated—all symptoms of a stroke. The medical team knew they had only minutes to act. Every second was crucial to avoid permanent damage.

The chosen treatment, thrombolysis, which dissolves the clot blocking the cerebral artery, was administered with a cutting-edge drug, Metalyse, just 39 minutes after the patient's admission to the hospital. The promptness of the treatment had an immediate and spectacular effect: the man showed a rapid and sustained recovery.

A winning rescue chain

The success of this operation is the result of coordinated and effective action. The rescue chain began with 118 nurse Matteo Iacono, who recognized the gravity of the situation and communicated directly with the emergency room.

The welcome at Rizzoli Hospital was immediate, thanks to Dr. Stefano Parlamento's team, composed of Dr. Olimpia Iacono and nurses Leonardo Trani and Luca Perozzi.

The role of radiology was also crucial: Dr. Lucia d'Alessandro quickly performed a CT scan to confirm the diagnosis. Finally, a teleconsultation with a neurologist helped overcome the limitations of insularity, providing crucial support to the local team.
