Castel Volturno: Record summer for sea turtles: 44 nests recorded

CASTEL VOLTURNO – A record-breaking summer for Caretta caretta sea turtles on the Domitian coast of Castel Volturno. Forty-four nests were recorded this year, cementing the site as one of the most important in Italy and the first in the entire western Mediterranean basin.

Campania Regional Vice President Fulvio Bonavitacola will welcome members of the Domizia Association, led by Vincenzo Ammaliato, to the Regional Council Chamber tomorrow. The association is involved in the "Caretta in Vista" project. The initiative, in collaboration with the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station, has monitored and protected sea turtle nesting , demonstrating the effectiveness of the synergy between institutions, the scientific community, civil society, and local stakeholders.

The achievement represents not only a scientific first, but also a concrete sign of environmental recovery for an area long marked by degradation. During the ceremony, the association will present awards to the initiative's volunteers and supporters, with works created by artist Alessandro Ciambrone, to celebrate the commitment that made this record nesting possible.
