Naples remembers Giancarlo Siani: an evening of remembrance and civic engagement.

Naples – Forty years without Giancarlo Siani. Forty years since September 23, 1985, when the Camorra decided to silence the voice of a young reporter who, at just 26, had chosen to fearlessly expose the dark connections between politics, business, and organized crime.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 23, the City of Naples will remember him with an evening event at the Monumental Complex of San Domenico Maggiore (20 pm), in the spirit of remembrance and civic commitment.

Two first screenings to tell the story of courage and wounds

The program includes a double public preview screening. The documentary "Forty Years Without Giancarlo Siani," directed by Filippo Soldi and produced by Combo International with Rai Documentari, featuring Toni Servillo, retraces the journalist's life and work, as well as the judicial investigation that, years later, led to the identification of those who ordered and executed his murder.

The short film "Ciro's Birthday," by Marta Esposito, brings to the screen the story of another innocent victim of the Camorra: Ciro Colonna, killed at just 19 years old in 2016 in Ponticelli, in a tragic case of mistaken identity. Admission to the evening is free, subject to availability.

An audience of voices to not forget

Speakers on stage will include representatives of institutions, journalism, and associations: Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi; Audiovisual Delegate Ferdinando Tozzi; Libera Campania representative Mariano Di Palma; Paolo Siani, Giancarlo's brother; Magistrate Armando D'Alterio, who led the murder investigation; journalist Pietro Perone, author of the book "Giancarlo Siani. Terra Enemica"; director Filippo Soldi; the Colonna family; director Marta Esposito; and actress Marianna Mercurio, who starred in the short film about Ciro.

The green Méhari and the uncomfortable investigations

Siani wasn't just a crime reporter. He investigated, connected, and exposed. His byline became infamous when he revealed the connections between politics and clans, especially in the reconstruction business after the 1980 earthquake. It was that series of articles that sealed his conviction: on September 23, 1985, while returning home in the Arenella neighborhood, he was killed under his green Citroën Mehari.

Soldi's documentary reconstructs not only that tragic day, but also the work of the so-called "Siani Pool," a group of journalists who, starting in 1993, helped reopen the investigation, ultimately uncovering the truth and responsibility for the murder.

The birthday that never was

Before the main screening, "Ciro's Birthday," which premiered at the 55th Giffoni Film Festival, will be shown. A poetic and poignant tale, mother Adelaide imagines her son's return home after years abroad, to a celebration that will never be celebrated.

The short film was born from a creative workshop hosted at the Spazio Metamorfosi in Ponticelli, as part of the "The Voice of Young People" project, promoted by the City of Naples with the Giffoni Innovation Hub. Ten young people, aged 13 to 18, participated in an audiovisual language education program, in collaboration with Libera and the Istituto Comprensivo 83° Porchiano Bordiga.

Produced by Giffoni Innovation Hub, Mad Entertainment, and Gabbianella, with the patronage of Libera and the support of the Municipality, the short film thus becomes part of a broader journey of education on legality and shared memory.

A living legacy

The evening at San Domenico Maggiore will not be just a memory. It will be an opportunity to reaffirm, forty years after his murder, that Giancarlo Siani's voice has not been silenced. It lives on in the work of journalists who continue to report on the mafia today, in the young people who learn to recognize the languages ​​of truth, and in the collective memory that Naples renews, year after year, in the name of justice and dignity.
