A 40-year-old man, in a state of profound economic and psychological crisis, was persuaded by the Carabinieri to desist from suicide while he already had a knife held to his throat.

The dramatic sequence began shortly after 20:40 PM, when the Operations Center of the Caserta Provincial Carabinieri Command received a desperate call through the Single Emergency Number 112. On the other end of the line, the broken voice of a man declaring he couldn't take it anymore.

Unemployed and in abysmal isolation, he recounts living for months in the dark, without water or gas, almost starving. His desperation has a predetermined outcome: at that moment, a knife is pressed against his throat, and his resolve to end it all is unwavering.

It is at this point that the extremely delicate rescue protocol, both technological and human, kicks in. The dispatchers, maintaining exemplary composure, immediately initiate geolocalization of the call to pinpoint the man's exact location in Vairano Scalo.

At the same time, without ever interrupting the conversation, they begin a process of persuasion through calm, listening, and reassuring words. Minute by minute, they manage to establish trust, convincing the 40-year-old to remove the knife from his throat.

While the voice on the phone tries to calm the soul, the rescue operation is already underway. The Caserta headquarters alerts the Capua Company, which in turn immediately diverts a Carabinieri patrol from the Vairano Scalo station, already on patrol in the area, to the scene.

The officers arrived on the scene within minutes, finding the man calmer but still visibly shaken. Their approach was cautious and respectful of his fragility. The man then voluntarily handed over his weapon to the officers, realizing the gravity of the act he was about to commit.

Thanks to the seamless collaboration between the operations centers and, above all, the empathetic and professional management of the operators and members of the Carabinieri, a life was saved. After receiving psychological first aid on the scene, the man was entrusted to local health services for necessary assistance and treatment.
