Giugliano – The fight against toxic fires in the Land of Fires (Terra dei Fuchi) is marking a significant breakthrough thanks to technology. A 72-hour offensive led to the arrest of three people in the Giugliano area in Campania.

The common denominator of these interventions is not only the timeliness of the police, but the effectiveness of the Control Room: an advanced operations room that acts as a true "sentinel" of the territory, capable of intercepting fires in their infancy and guiding patrols to a safe conclusion.

Furniture, plastic, and monitors on fire: couple arrested

The most recent incident occurred last night in the Via Vicinale Trenga area. The control room raised the alarm: cameras detected a thick column of black smoke. An Italian Army unit is already on site, confirming the severity of the fire.

What caught fire was an improvised illegal landfill consisting of furniture, tires, plastic, cans, and even circuit boards and components from monitors and televisions. The Carabinieri of the Operational Intervention Squad (SIO) of the 10th Campania Regiment and the Fire Brigade immediately arrived on the scene. While the firefighters put out the flames, the military began searching for those responsible.

A 45-year-old Nigerian man and a 41-year-old Italian woman were arrested. The man had attempted an unlikely escape, hiding in the cellar of a nearby building. When searched, he was found in possession of the gas lighter most likely used to start the fire. The investigation revealed a banal yet damaging modus operandi: the two had just emptied a house occupied by the woman, disposing of old furniture and trash, and set it on fire nearby. They are currently awaiting trial.

Flash fire and escape: 70-year-old betrayed by videos

The electronic eye had already proved essential on Saturday, at Via Ex Alleati 32. In this case too, the Control Room reported to the SIO a man intent on setting fire to piles of waste abandoned on the roadside, in the middle of an agricultural area.

When the Carabinieri and Fire Department arrived, the arsonist was nowhere to be found. But their escape was of little use: officers from the Pozzuoli Carabinieri Forestry Unit acquired the footage recorded by the Control Room. Analysis of the frames allowed them to identify the perpetrator: a 70-year-old local man, located shortly thereafter and arrested using the "deferred flagrante delicto" technique.
