Scampia: Mafia boss Pietro Gemito arrested; hunt underway for those who covered up his fugitive status

Naples – For once, the concrete of Scampia wasn't an impenetrable shell. Pietro Gemito, 30, the man who for weeks played hide-and-seek with the state among the Chalet Bakù lots, saw his dream of impunity dashed yesterday afternoon.

The "wall" that protected him, made of downcast glances and complicit silences, crumbled under the blows of the soldiers of the Stella Company, who for days had transformed Via Arcangelo Ghisleri into a chessboard for the final capture.

The escape from the February blitz

Gemito's name had been at the top of the wanted list since February 4th. That morning, while a massive law enforcement operation was dismantling the Amato-Pagano holding company with 14 pre-trial detention orders, the thirty-year-old rising leader of the Raia clan had managed to vanish into thin air.

An escape that lasted weeks, experienced like a ghost on the streets where he had grown up, convinced that the clan's widespread control of the territory would guarantee him a golden life in hiding.

But Gemito's criminal caliber isn't only evident in his ability to evade capture. The investigation revealed a disturbing profile: even within the walls of Secondigliano prison, in 2022, the boss allegedly managed to flout security protocols. Using smuggled cell phones, he continued to manage the clan's affairs and issue directives, transforming his cell into an operations center.

From the Pettirosso kidnapping to the new arrest

The thirty-year-old's criminal record is marked by brutal episodes. Gemito, as Roma recalls, was tried for the dramatic kidnapping of worker Stefano Pettirosso, receiving a 20-year prison sentence in the first instance. A very heavy sentence, then sensationally overturned and quashed on appeal thanks to the defense of his lawyer, Dario Carmine Procentese. A legal success that restored his freedom, before the new pre-trial detention order turned him once again into a fugitive.

Hunt for supporters

After the usual formalities, Gemito's prison doors have reopened. The crucial date is set for tomorrow morning, when the leader will appear before the Preliminary Investigations Judge for a preliminary hearing. He will face serious charges that place him at the top of the Scampia crime syndicate. Meanwhile, investigators' attention is turning to the network that protected him while he was on the run: the hunt for the supporters who provided food and lodging to the "ghost" of Bakù is officially on.
