It's just after 3 a.m. when three people break into a parking garage on Via Manzoni, in Naples' Posillipo neighborhood . They force their way into it and drive away in a Range Rover Sport. The luxury SUV disappears into the darkness, but the heist quickly takes an unexpected turn.
The stolen vehicle was equipped with a satellite tracking device. The alarm immediately reached the Carabinieri Operations Center in Giugliano in Campania, which located the car on Via Santa Maria a Cubito. At 3:19 a.m., a police car arrived on the scene. The Range Rover was parked, its headlights still on, on a side street.
Two men are still inside. When they see officers approaching for a check, they suddenly put the SUV into gear and slammed it into the police car. The head-on impact is violent. Immediately afterward, they reverse and crash into a guard rail. The two abandon the vehicle and flee on foot through unkempt land, brush, and fences. The Carabinieri pursue them, but their escape ends dramatically.
In an attempt to cover his tracks, one of the fugitives loses something while climbing a fence: his cell phone and driver's license. The documents are recovered by the police and become the key to identifying the suspect. Footage from the garage's surveillance cameras confirms that the young man is the same person captured during the robbery. He is a 22-year-old with no criminal record, resident in Mugnano di Napoli.
The search began immediately. The Carabinieri attempted to locate the young man at his home, but only his father, who had nothing to do with the incident, was present. The 22-year-old, now with no way out, decided to voluntarily report to the police station, accompanied by his lawyer. He was arrested and is currently in jail awaiting a hearing.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues to identify the other two members of the group, who have so far disappeared. The Carabinieri are analyzing further images and evidence to narrow down their identity.
