Collapse in Scampia: No injuries reported. The 47 evacuated families returned home, but only 49 residents are at risk.

Naples – The 47 families evacuated following the collapse of the Vela Rossa building in the Scampia neighborhood have returned to their homes. Only 49 people remain outside awaiting inspection.

"The residents of Scampia, belonging to the 47 families evacuated yesterday as a precaution following the collapse of the Vela Rossa building" in the Scampia neighborhood of Naples, are gradually returning to their homes. This was stated by the Campania regional councilor for Civil Protection, Fiorella Zabatta. The collapse, late yesterday evening, originated in an area where the elevator shaft of the uninhabited building, currently being demolished, was located.

The collapse filled Via Gioberti with debris, where a building was evacuated by firefighters as a precaution. No one was injured in the collapse. "At the moment, some residents of Staircase F alone are temporarily out of their homes, for a total of 49 people, 31 adults and 18 children," adds Zabatta. "Some residents had been evacuated due to the lack of electricity caused by damage to the electrical substation serving the area and were able to return once the service was restored; others, however, were unable to safely access their homes due to the debris blocking the entrance to the building."

"The regional Civil Protection system immediately took action to provide assistance to the population throughout the night and support local operations: materials and equipment were sent to set up a temporary reception area and to ensure adequate living conditions for the families affected," the councilor concluded.
