In the photo, a detail of the story.
On his last day in Naples, before handing over command of the Interregional Carabinieri "Ogaden," Army Corps General Nicola Massimo Masciulli chose a farewell far removed from the usual formalities, entrusting it to three stops charged with meaning for the force and for the city.
The route reached the Basilica of Santa Chiara, where the remains of the Servant of God Salvo D'Acquisto lie, the Vice Brigadier who, at the age of 23, received the Gold Medal for Military Valor and sacrificed his life to save 22 innocent people. This site has already been the focus of celebrations in recent months for his recognition as "venerable."
The spiritual milestones were accompanied by institutional ones: the homage to the War Flag of the 10th Carabinieri Regiment "Campania" and to the Institute flag of the "Nunziatella" Military School, the historic academy on Pizzofalcone hill where Masciulli began his career in the force 46 years ago.
The flags, in this setting, are not just ceremonial symbols: they represent the founding values of civil coexistence and the sacrifice of those who fought to keep the country united, while D'Acquisto's tomb recalls the extreme choice of a young Carabiniere, set as an example for new generations.
The farewell concludes with a thread of continuity: the conviction, repeatedly reiterated by the general, that the Carabinieri must innovate without ever replacing the human connection with their communities. On the occasion of the Carabinieri Day, Masciulli had identified the balance between technology and a commitment to proximity as the "challenge of the third millennium" for the Carabinieri.
It is along these lines that the mandate to lead the "Ogaden" was oriented, with jurisdiction over five regions – Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Abruzzo and Molise – and with the aim of making the force even more present "where needed": on the streets, in the neighborhoods, alongside the citizens.
The general is now leaving Naples for Rome, where he will take up the post of Director of the Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate (DIA), one of the most sensitive operational hubs in the fight against organized crime. His successor at the helm of the "Ogaden," Army Corps General Rosario Castello, has already been designated to command the Interregional branch.
Meanwhile, the message to the Carabinieri of the Interregional Command is clear: continue to operate with "undiminished commitment and responsibility" in service of the community, maintaining that widespread presence that, according to Masciulli, remains the distinguishing feature of the force even in the era of modernization.
