Waste emergency in Naples: Traiano district submerged in garbage

Naples – A massive open-air landfill is paralyzing Viale Traiano, in the heart of the Traiano district . The accumulation of waste has invaded not only the sidewalks but also part of the roadway, creating a situation of degradation and a traffic hazard. The grim picture of the neighborhood was shared by the Green-Left Alliance MP, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who received a video from a citizen who witnessed the desolate scene firsthand.

The Rione Traiano, developed in the 50s and 60s as a model neighborhood integrated with nature and architecture, is now a symbol of abandonment and neglect, like many other public housing neighborhoods in Naples. Piles of garbage, plastic bags, and debris litter the streets, compromising the safety and livability of the entire area. Borrelli called the situation "unacceptable," emphasizing that the degradation is also the result of a failure to combat illegal construction and environmental pollution.

"It is no longer tolerable," the MP stated, "that entire lanes are filled with waste, endangering the health and safety of citizens, especially with the arrival of summer. We have already sent an urgent report to Asia, requesting extraordinary cleanup and safety measures in the area. In addition to improving waste collection, it is essential to intensify checks and install cameras to combat those who illegally dump waste."

Borrelli's appeal is part of a broader picture of urban decay afflicting many working-class neighborhoods in Naples, where a lack of efficient services and institutional disinterest often fuel environmental and social emergencies.
