Caserta, a young man dies; his parents donate his heart, kidneys, and corneas: grief turns to hope.

Caserta – From the most devastating pain, a message of hope was born. The parents of a boy who died at a very young age from a severe head injury chose to donate his organs, transforming a family tragedy into a concrete chance for other patients.

The young man was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Sant'Anna and San Sebastiano Hospital in Caserta. After brain death was confirmed, the entire organ donation process was initiated and successfully completed.

Thanks to the family's decision, the heart, kidneys, and corneas were harvested and donated to patients on the transplant waiting list within the regional network.

A team effort between the hospital and the Transplant Center

The entire process was coordinated by the Hospital Procurement Department of the Sant'Anna and San Sebastiano Hospital, in close collaboration with the Campania Regional Transplant Center.
The various phases—from clinical observation to the determination of brain death, from donor care to organ procurement—were managed thanks to the synergy between the Caserta hospital's operating units and the surgical teams of the transplant centers receiving the organs.

"The AORN hospital community extends its heartfelt condolences to the young donor's family, expressing deep gratitude to his mother and father for their exemplary example of love for others," said General Manager Gennaro Volpe.

In the most excruciating moment of grief, they found the strength to take a life-saving step, choosing to help patients awaiting transplants. The process leading to organ harvesting and subsequent transplants is the result of exceptional multidisciplinary work. Thanks to the Regional Transplant Center and all the professionals involved. Transplants can save lives, but without donations, they cannot exist.

Donation numbers in 2026

The Caserta hospital's transplant activity confirms its ongoing commitment to the sector.
Since the beginning of 2026, five multiorgan harvests and six cornea harvests have been performed. Corneal transplantation activities have continued, while regular care and follow-up services are provided to patients undergoing liver and kidney transplants, both inpatient and outpatient.

The InfoPoint to promote the culture of donation

The InfoPoint of the Territorial Transplant Coordination, located in the lobby of Building F of the Sant'Anna and San Sebastiano Hospital, also remains operational.

Here, citizens can receive information about organ donation and sign a declaration of intent. The office is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
