Pozzuoli calls for a special law for the Phlegraean Fields and the suspension of local taxes following the earthquake.

The earthquake that struck the Campi Flegrei on July 31, with a magnitude of 4.7, highlighted the vulnerability of the area and the need for more effective and long-lasting legislative intervention. Luigi Manzoni, mayor of Pozzuoli, the municipality most affected by the quake, expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the emergency decree currently in force, calling it insufficient to address the critical issues facing the area.

Manzoni announced that his office is carefully reviewing the decree's critical issues, hoping for targeted corrections. In the meantime, he prioritized suspending local taxes for evicted families and deferring payments for upcoming deadlines, extending this measure to commercial businesses and professional firms.

The mayor emphasized that emergency management, repeated after each bradyseismic tremor, is no longer sufficient for a phenomenon that constantly affects the communities of Campi Flegrei. For this reason, he called for the creation of a special law, agreed upon by the Campania Region, affected municipalities, and the national government, to clearly define roles, interventions, and tools to be activated in the event of seismic events.

According to Manzoni, only stable legislation can provide an effective and timely response, distinguishing it from the impromptu interventions that have characterized emergency management to date. In this context, the creation of a control room to coordinate actions across the various institutional levels is also essential.

The mayor of Pozzuoli's request highlights the urgent need for a systematic approach to protect the safety and well-being of communities living in an area at high seismic and volcanic risk.
