Elderly man killed in Varcaturo: 25-year-old arrested
Nearly a year after the Varcaturo crime, a breakthrough in the investigation has arrived. Carabinieri officers from the Giugliano in Campania Company have executed a pre-trial detention order against a 25-year-old man, seriously suspected of aggravated voluntary manslaughter and aggravated theft. The order was issued by the Preliminary Investigations Judge of the Naples North Court at the request of the Prosecutor's Office.
The arrest represents the culmination of a long and complex investigative activity coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Naples North and conducted by the Operational Section of the Company Carabinieri of Giugliano, with the support of the Varcaturo Carabinieri Station.
The investigation began after the lifeless body of a 68-year-old man was discovered on April 9, 2025, inside his home in the Varcaturo district of Giugliano in Campania. The victim's face was swollen, a detail that immediately led to the suspicion of a violent death.
The investigative findings, according to the prosecution's approach, allowed the reconstruction of the murder dynamics and the identification of the alleged perpetrator.
According to the investigation, the 25-year-old was a regular visitor to the victim. The tragedy apparently erupted after an argument erupted over trivial matters. The suspect initially restrained the 68-year-old, repeatedly punching him in the face, before tightening his grip on his neck, causing his death from cardiac arrest.
After the attack, investigators say, the young man stole the victim's cell phone and a small sum of money, also ransacking the house in an attempt to simulate a burglary or cover up any traces.
The investigators' detailed technical investigations were crucial in identifying the alleged perpetrator. Specifically, the analysis of the video surveillance systems in the area and the investigation of the telephone and internet traffic of the devices used by the suspect consolidated the circumstantial evidence that led to the issuance of the precautionary measure.
As required by law, the proceedings are still in the preliminary investigation phase. The suspect is therefore presumed innocent until a final conviction is issued.
