Caremar is strengthening its maritime connections to ensure supplies to Ischia after the earthquake.

The recent earthquake that struck the municipality of Pozzuoli on July 31st made two buildings in the city center unsafe, leading to a ban on access to heavy vehicles weighing more than 35 tonnes in the port area.

This measure has jeopardized the supply of essential goods to the islands of Ischia and Procida, particularly perishable foodstuffs.

To address the crisis, the Campania Region's Department of Transport has reorganized the maritime connections in the Gulf of Naples. After rescheduling the regional nighttime routes operated by Medmar, Caremar has activated a new daily service on weekdays: a route from Ischia to Porta di Massa at 4:00 a.m. and one from Naples at 5:50 a.m.

This new pair of routes is essential to ensure the timely arrival of heavy goods vehicles on the mainland and, above all, to ensure the timely distribution of fresh produce to Ischia's supermarkets. The initiative has been welcomed by the island's transport associations and large-scale retail trade, such as New Atec, Aicom-Aicast, and the GDO group.

However, the solution doesn't fully meet Procida's needs, which remains excluded from Caremar's new routes despite the island also experiencing difficulties related to the emergency situation.

The initiative stems from a series of discussions organized by the Prefecture of Naples, in collaboration with local authorities, shipping companies, and participating associations, to ensure continuity and safety in the maritime transport system, which is essential for island communities.
