Earthquake in Campi Flegrei: SUNIA raises the alarm, requiring extraordinary resources for reconstruction.

The powerful earthquake that struck the Campi Flegrei area on July 31, 2026, with its epicenter in the Municipality of Pozzuoli, has caused a serious housing and social emergency. SUNIA, the tenants' union, expresses solidarity with the many families affected and denounces the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the resources allocated so far are insufficient to address the damage.

To date, approximately 230 ACER public housing units have been evicted, particularly in the Rione Marocchini, Traversa Corso Umberto I, and Via Artiaco neighborhoods. Hundreds of families have been forced to abandon their homes, while requests for technical inspections have exceeded 2.000, demonstrating the extent of the situation. SUNIA is calling for an immediate increase in technical staff to expedite inspections and allow people to return to homes deemed safe.

The emergency affects not only public housing, but also thousands of private homes and numerous commercial, artisanal, and manufacturing businesses that have suffered damage or been forced to suspend operations. The government has allocated €100 million, but for SUNIA, this amount is only a first step and does not adequately address the extent of the damage. A multi-year investment plan is needed to ensure the safety of buildings and provide concrete support to families and businesses.

Among the demands put forward by SUNIA are the suspension of TARI payments for uninhabitable properties, the suspension of rent for both public and private housing, the suspension of mortgage and bank loan payments without penalty, as well as an extraordinary financial support plan for displaced persons and affected businesses.

The union emphasizes that the right to housing and work cannot be compromised by disasters and calls on the Government, the Campania Region, local municipalities, and ACER Campania to make a concrete and lasting commitment to prevent this emergency from turning into a permanent social crisis. SUNIA is committed to maintaining an ongoing dialogue with the institutions to ensure additional resources and measures appropriate to the gravity of the situation.
