Emergency at Benevento prison: union raises alarm

Benevento – Exhausting work shifts, up to twenty-four hours at a time, are being implemented to stem the shockwave of unrest and critical incidents. This is the alarming picture that the Provincial Secretariat of the USPP (Union of Penitentiary Police Unions) formally reported today to the Prefect and Mayor of Benevento, requesting immediate action at the county prison.

A powder keg managed with sacrifice

The recent, serious unrest and the critical issues that have erupted over the past year, the union denounces, have been contained only thanks to the professionalism and sense of duty of the men and women of the Corps. This sacrifice comes at a very high price: officers are forced to work grueling shifts, with duties lasting sixteen hours and, in some cases, up to an entire day without a break. "The staff are now subjected to a level of physical and psychological fatigue that is no longer sustainable," thunders the USPP.

The requests: "Reinforcements are needed immediately"

In its letter to the highest local authorities, the USPP not only denounces the situation, but also makes specific requests: the immediate deployment of temporary reinforcements to address the emergency, the permanent assignment of new staff to address the structural shortage, and the opening of urgent institutional discussions to find long-term solutions.

“No blame on the Management”

In a gesture of institutional responsibility, the union wishes to clarify that the serious situation is not attributable to the Institute's management or the Regional Education Authority, which operated with the limited resources available, ensuring the necessary coordination during the most critical phases of the emergency.

The ultimatum: ready to mobilize

Patience, however, is running out. If concrete and timely responses aren't forthcoming, the USPP announces it won't rule out organizing public and peaceful protests, in full compliance with the law. This ultimatum increases the pressure on Palazzo Mosti and the Prefecture, now called upon to respond to a crisis that threatens to explode.
