Michele Pinto, a politician originally from Teggiano and a key figure in Italian institutional life, has died at the age of 95. The former senator and minister passed away while he was in Sangineto, in the province of Cosenza, at the house where he usually spent his summers.
Pinto has spanned decades of Italian politics, initially serving in the Christian Democrats and later in the Italian People's Party. In 1996, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies on the Olive Tree ticket and, following his election victory, joined the first government led by Romano Prodi as Minister of Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies.
Among Pinto's most significant positions was that of chairman of the Senate Justice Committee. In this role, he promoted the so-called Pinto Law, which introduced a system of fair compensation for damages, both pecuniary and non-pecuniary, suffered due to the unreasonable length of trials.
His political activity was not limited to parliamentary and government roles. Pinto also served as a city councilor in Teggiano, maintaining strong ties to his homeland over the years.
In 2005, one of the most important institutional recognitions arrived: the then President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi awarded him the title of Knight of the Grand Cross of Merit of the Italian Republic.
The news of his passing has sparked deep grief in the Teggiano community. Mayor Michele Di Candia remembered Pinto as "a precious and unparalleled figure," emphasizing his political and human qualities.
"For all of us, Senator Pinto represented an example of extraordinary political ability, loyalty, respect for institutions, devotion to the values of the Constitution, and, above all, a great love for his homeland," declared the mayor, expressing the city administration's condolences to the family.
Michele Pinto's final farewell is scheduled for Friday, August 21st, at 4:30 p.m., in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Salerno, where the funeral will be held.
His passing leaves a void in the community of Teggiano and in the Italian political and institutional world, to which Pinto dedicated a long season of his life.
