Ancona, serious accident at Fincantieri: one dead and one injured; strike begins today.

Ancona – One worker died and another is in critical condition: this is the toll from a workplace accident that occurred last night at the Ancona shipyard. The unions are calling an eight-hour strike.

The victim, a 55-year-old man of Tunisian origin, was struck by a flame and died from burns. A 29-year-old man of Bangladeshi origin is in critical condition and is hospitalized in Ancona.

Around 10:15 PM, the two workers, employed by a contractor, were caught in a blaze while working on a ship inside a warehouse. Firefighters and police cars also responded to the scene last night. Forensic scientists are also conducting investigations to determine the cause of the fatal blaze, possibly triggered by a spark during cutting with a torch and acetylene.

The deceased worker, a father and resident of Ancona according to initial reports, arrived at the emergency room charred and in critical condition. The other injured worker, a father of two, also arrived at the emergency room in critical condition with burns to various parts of his body. He was treated at the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit of the Ancona University Hospital but was transferred to the Burns Center in Pisa.

The Fiom, Fim and Uilm unions, protesting in front of the plant, have called an eight-hour strike.

The secretariats of FIM, FIOM, and UILM have called an eight-hour strike for each work shift today, Wednesday, September 30, also involving contractors. "Enough with deaths at work. It is no longer acceptable that fatal accidents continue to occur in our country without anything changing," say FIM, FIOM, and UILM. "We need to change the culture of safety, which is still too often considered solely a business expense. Investment in training and adequate prevention and protection tools are needed to avoid further tragedies."

The unions are also calling for a review of the organizational model based on contracting and subcontracting, denouncing the increased frequency of accidents in companies operating within this system. The secretariats of FIM, FIOM, and UILM, along with the plant union representatives and Fincantieri workers, express their condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased worker.
