Antonio Nardi
Today, in the Church of the Santissima Addolorata alla Stadera, the spotlight on a life cut short too soon is turned off, and the relentless and painful light of an investigation that resembles a puzzle is turned on. The funeral of Antonio Nardi, the twenty-six-year-old pizza chef—the father of three girls—who died during the night between September 15th and 16th on Via Nuova Casoria, in the Rione della Bussola, in San Pietro a Patierno, is being held this afternoon.
A street on the northern outskirts of Naples, a stone's throw from Capodichino, transformed into a shadow theater. It was here that the young man lost his life in a car accident that, more than two weeks later, remains shrouded in mystery.
The initial version speaks of a violent crash into a street lamp, which occurred while Antonio was riding a scooter with two other people, perhaps fleeing after an attempted robbery involving a Rolex.
But the investigators' story is met with a wall of opacity. No charges for attempted thefts of luxury watches were filed that night. And most importantly, the scooter and its alleged accomplices have disappeared without a trace, vanishing like a deleted scene.
Forensic scientists and investigators have combed the asphalt, while the family demands clear answers. Meanwhile, the virtual suburbs are seething: videos and photos have been circulating on TikTok for days, pillorying two local business owners, who have been identified by online users as targets of suspicion and direct accusations. A heated atmosphere is brewing, mixing grief over the loss with dangerous tensions.
Making the tragedy even more heartbreaking is the portrait of who Antonio truly was. A life marked by deep scars, beginning with a difficult adolescence and a stint in the Nisida juvenile detention center.
Then, the choice to change course.
Antonio's story had become a classic redemption story told by newspapers: in 2020, the Bergamo press celebrated the twenty-year-old who, thanks to the training program of the "Scugnizzi" association, had managed to find decent work in pizzerias in Northern Italy. A skill learned in Naples and practiced around the country, capable of transforming itself into a passport to a new life.
Pizza wasn't just hard work and dough, but the key to reclaiming the future, leaving old mistakes behind, and dreaming of one day owning his own place in his hometown. Today, amid the messages of condolence from friends, the memory of a boy who almost defied fate remains. And of a debt to the truth that the city now demands be settled.
