Caivano, dangerous miasmas in the ASI zone: the mayor closes schools

A night of shock and intense apprehension in Caivano. In the early hours of the morning, Carabinieri from the local company responded promptly to the site of a company specializing in the production of paints and coatings within the ASI Pascarola area.

The alarm was triggered by a sudden chemical reaction—the causes of which are still being investigated by technicians—which caused intense, irritating fumes to leak from one of the plant's tanks.

The intervention and the seizure

The immediate intervention of the Fire Department made the facility safe: the affected tank was promptly sealed and inertized to prevent any further fumes. The entire area of ​​the accident was placed under judicial seizure, while the Carabinieri began an investigation to reconstruct the precise sequence of events and identify any potential culprits.

Municipality under lockdown and emergency measures

Faced with the potential threat to public health, the government's response was immediate. The Mayor of Caivano signed an emergency ordinance ordering the immediate closure of all schools of all levels, the municipal cemetery, public parks, and playgrounds. All outdoor sports activities were also suspended.

Citizens are strongly advised to wear FFP2 masks outdoors, keep windows tightly closed, and avoid using mechanical ventilation systems or air conditioning until further notice.

Emergency meeting at the Prefecture

The Prefect of Naples, Michele di Bari, convened an urgent meeting of the Rescue Coordination Center (CCS). The meeting was attended by the Mayors of Caivano, Antonio Angelino; Casoria, Raffaele Bene; Afragola, Gennaro Giustino; the Director of ARPAC, Dario Mirella; the Director of the Local Health Authority (ASL Na 2); and the Minister of the Interior's representative for the Terra dei Fuochi (Land of Fires) area, Ciro Silvestro. Representatives of the Fire Department and the Police were also present. The Prefecture of Caserta and the Director of the Prevention Department of the Caserta Local Health Authority also attended the meeting.

The initial interventions carried out by firefighters confirmed that the phenomenon was reversing and that no toxic substances had been released, only irritants. To rule out any residual risk factors and complete the assessment, ongoing and thorough checks on environmental conditions and air quality were carried out.
