The new Circumvesuviana train
Naples – More trains and shorter journeys for tourists heading to the Amalfi Coast; cuts, delays, and partially serviced trains for thousands of students and commuters. Protests over the management of the Circumvesuviana have reignited following the announcement of new timetables and the rescheduling of lines operated by EAV.
In a joint statement, representatives of the main local committees – Enzo Ciniglio and Salvatore Ferraro (Vesuvian Commuters Committee), Marcello Fabbrocini (Cifariello Civic Committee of Ottaviano), and Salvatore Alaia (E(a)vitiamolo Committee of Sperone) – denounce a chronic disparity in treatment between the coastal section and the rest of the network.
According to traveler spokespeople, company decisions continue to penalize the internal routes to Baiano, Sarno, Poggiomarino, and San Giorgio a Cremano.
"Same script, same announcements, and same blatant injustice," the statement reads. "A 'showcase' line like the Naples-Sorrento is systematically rewarded at the expense of the arteries used every day by students and workers, without any credible technical or social justification."
The situation is particularly critical for evening connections and for construction sites still open:
Sarno line: service interrupted at 20:00 pm.
Baiano Line: services limited to the 7:00-19:00 time slot, with hourly frequency.
San Giorgio line: construction sites have been blocked for some time, with no night or holiday shifts.
Commuter representatives are demanding equal treatment for all construction sites along the network, questioning why 24-hour work shifts and weekends aren't being imposed to return the internal lines to the public, just as was done for the tunnels on the Sorrento section.
The committees' final attack also points to recent management changes: "Anyone hoping for fair management of resources must face reality: the change in leadership hasn't changed the substance. The protagonists have changed, but the score remains the same old operetta."
