Gragnano and Castellammare: Carabinieri make arrests and seizures of drugs and bladed weapons.
Sessa Aurunca – They posed as law enforcement officers, gaining the trust of a pensioner and convincing him to deposit a whopping €7 into a "secure" postal account. This is a classic but increasingly widespread scam, which culminated in three people being reported at large by the Carabinieri of the Sessa Aurunca station.
The investigation began after a 68-year-old man, originally from the Aurunci area but resident in Turin, filed a complaint. Using a meticulously orchestrated phone call, which exploited fear and trust in institutions, the scammers managed to secure a total of €7.000, entirely without insurance coverage.
Through meticulous analysis of financial flows and telephone records, the Carabinieri were able to trace the owner of the phone used for the contact and the destination bank accounts. The following are under investigation, charged with fraud and conspiracy to commit impersonation:
A 39-year-old from the province of Caserta;
A 24-year-old from the province of Naples;
A 25-year-old of Libyan origin, resident in the Nuoro area.
According to investigators' reconstruction, the three worked together, dividing the tasks between the telephone contact phase and the subsequent management of the sums extorted from the victim.
The incident refocuses attention on the dangers of telephone scams, a phenomenon in which criminals often exploit the names of institutions, police forces, or banks to pressure citizens into making bank transfers or urgent financial transactions.
The Carabinieri have issued yet another warning to exercise extreme caution: no member of the police force or law enforcement agency will ever ask for money or conduct financial transactions over the phone.
The proceedings are currently in the preliminary investigation phase. The three suspects are presumed innocent until a final conviction is issued.
