Phlegraean Fields: Churches damaged by bradyseism, four buildings to be secured immediately.

Pozzuoli – Not only are homes, businesses, and infrastructure among the buildings under pressure from the long-running bradyseismic crisis in the Phlegraean Fields. The religious heritage of the Diocese of Pozzuoli also bears the marks of the tremors and the stresses in the ground. Nineteen places of worship in the Pozzuoli area have suffered damage, and four of them require particularly urgent safety measures.

This is the situation discussed this morning at the Prefecture of Naples, where a meeting was held specifically to address the situation of places of worship damaged by bradyseism. The focus of the discussion is not only the preservation of the historical and religious heritage, but above all the need to eliminate the risk conditions that may also affect nearby buildings and homes.

Four structures considered priority

For the four buildings identified as most urgent, the problem also concerns the risk posed to surrounding homes. Some of these, precisely because of the hazardous conditions, have already been evacuated. The priority is therefore to address the most affected structures, thus reducing the risk and, where possible, allowing a return to normalcy in the affected areas.

The meeting focused primarily on the resources needed to finance the interventions. One option is the funding already requested by the Superintendency from the Ministry of Culture, which could be supplemented by the emergency procedures to be activated by the Campania Region, given the need to ensure public safety.

Region, Municipality and Superintendency in the field

The meeting was attended by the bishop of Pozzuoli and Ischia, Monsignor Carlo Villano, the regional councillor for Culture Onofrio Cutaia, the general director of the regional Civil Protection Italo Giulivo, the councillor for Territorial Government of the Municipality of Pozzuoli Vittorio Gloria and the representatives of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan area of ​​Naples.

The meeting aimed to strengthen coordination between the various institutions involved and, above all, to identify the fastest administrative route to secure funding and begin the necessary work on the most critical structures.

We are also waiting for the new government measures.

On the resource front, a further opportunity could come from the law converting Decree-Law 144/2026, which, according to the meeting, is expected to be completed in the first week of October. The measure could contain additional emergency-related support measures, which could also be used for repairs to places of worship affected by bradyseism.

The game therefore remains strictly linked to the ability of the institutions to transform the available resources and those

possibly resulting in concrete interventions. For the four buildings considered priority, the time factor takes on particular importance due to the consequences that the conditions of the structures could have on the safety of nearby homes.

At the end of the meeting, Monsignor Villano expressed satisfaction with the attention given to the problem, thanking the institutions present for their commitment and willingness to find solutions to the situations deemed most urgent.
