Torre del Greco, the site of the shooting
Torre del Greco – A simple request, a broken lighter, and a sudden fuse ignited in the heart of the nightlife. A simple "Can you light me a cigarette?" addressed to a young woman was enough to transform the night between Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th, into a veritable war bulletin. On Via Marconi, just steps from a club crowded with young patrons, a punitive expedition unfolded, resulting in bloodshed.
The Carabinieri of the Torre del Greco Company closed the loop by arresting a twenty-one-year-old local man, seriously suspected of attempted murder, carrying a concealed weapon with a removed serial number, and receiving stolen goods. The Preliminary Investigations Judge of the Torre Annunziata Court, fully granting the Prosecutor's Office's request, confirmed the arrest and issued a pre-trial detention order.
According to the reconstruction by the Carabinieri investigators, the episode was not the result of an isolated incident, but rather the tragic epilogue of a brutal attack. A group of young people—whose members are currently being identified—targeted a peer. The victim's "fault"? He simply asked a young woman in the group to light a cigarette, due to a broken lighter.
A futile excuse triggered the mob's violence. Words and shoving quickly turned to horror: the twenty-one-year-old emerged from the group armed with a pistol, pulled out his weapon and fired at least five times, aiming directly at chest height into the stunned crowd.
In the first tense hours after the shooting, the incident seemed to have ended with a fortunately light toll: a young man, completely unrelated to the incident, was wounded in the foot by a stray bullet. But the investigators' intuition, guided step by step by the footage from the area's surveillance cameras and the testimonies gathered on the scene, dug deeper.
The real target of the hail of fire was another young man, who initially remained undetected. When questioned by the police, the young man continued to deny having been hit. What gave him away were his poor health: extreme paleness and constant retching. Upon undergoing a personal examination, doctors and investigators discovered the horrifying truth: an entry and exit wound in his right groin, right in the vital area.
The turning point came with a house search conducted at the suspect's residence. The Carabinieri found and seized not only the illegal weapon used in the attack, but also the very clothes he had been wearing during the night of violence.
Torre del Greco is now gripped by a climate of profound dismay over a senseless act of violence unleashed for trivial reasons. During questioning, the suspect vaguely admitted to pulling the trigger, though he attempted to downplay his position and denied any intent to kill. This theory has been debunked by ballistics and CCTV footage.
The proceedings are currently pending in the preliminary investigation phase. As reiterated by the investigators, in accordance with the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence, the suspect cannot be considered guilty until a final conviction has been issued. The defense may appeal to the Court of Review.
