Incorrect Galenic Drug for an 18-Month-Old Girl: The Family Files a Complaint

Naples – The family of an 18-month-old girl reported the incident to the Prosecutor's Office due to the wrong medication.

The lawyers at Maior Associates, who are handling the case, announced the news. Attorneys Pierlorenzo Catalano, Michele Francesco Sorrentino, and Filippo Castaldo announced they have filed a formal complaint to shed light on a case involving an 18-month-old girl who became ill after taking a Galenic drug prepared at a pharmacy.

The events date back to late July 2026, when the little girl's parents consulted a child neuropsychiatrist for an evaluation following sleep disturbances. At the end of the examination, the doctor prescribed a galenic preparation based on niaprazine, to be administered according to a specific dosage and gradually.

"After approximately twenty days of continuous administration, the parents, suspicious of the characteristics of a second bottle they had purchased later, began to conduct some checks on the first preparation. The two bottles, in fact, showed significant differences in appearance, density, and even cost," the lawyers argue.

Further investigations revealed a significant discrepancy between the concentration of the active ingredient prescribed by the doctor and that reported or inferred from the first preparation, which, according to the report, was significantly higher than that indicated in the prescription. During the period of taking the drug, the child also exhibited various symptoms, including marked drowsiness, rapid breathing, tachycardia, sweating, and difficulty waking up.

The parents, concerned about their daughter's condition, contacted doctors and the Poison Control Center and subsequently took the little girl to the pediatric emergency room, where she underwent the necessary clinical and instrumental tests. Treatment was then suspended on medical advice.

At this point, the family decided to report the incident to verify every step of the supply chain (prescription, preparation, labeling, and distribution of the drug) and determine whether there were any material errors, omissions, or other anomalies that caused the child's illness.

"We felt it necessary to contact the Public Prosecutor's Office to conduct all the necessary technical and documentary investigations and to ensure that any responsibilities are identified in the appropriate courts. The family demands only truth and justice, and that every step of the preparation and administration of the drug be reconstructed," conclude lawyers Pierlorenzo Catalano, Michele Francesco Sorrentino, and Filippo Castaldo.
