Arzano, farewell to the 'tunnel of death': major underground cleanup completed
Arzano – One of the most painful and dramatic chapters in the environmental history of the northern Naples area has finally come to a close. The complex cleanup of the massive underground landfill hidden in the abandoned tunnel between Arzano and Secondigliano has been completed, eliminating a massive ecological bomb that had threatened the area for nearly thirty years.
The site, sadly scarred by a tragedy in the 1990s that killed 11 people, remained buried just meters from the city's main roundabout. Protected by the anonymity of its underground, the tunnel was transformed for decades into an illegal repository for thousands of tons of poison, fueling the concrete interests of eco-mafias.
The wall of silence was broken by local journalists' reports and the Municipal Police's inspections, which led to the area being seized. The operational breakthrough came thanks to the work of the sole commissioner for landfill remediation, Carabinieri Brigadier General Giuseppe Vadalà, whose office coordinated a massive environmental engineering effort to dismantle the "garbage connection."
Giuseppe Vitagliano, Mayor of Arzano, expressed satisfaction and emotion: "Restoring legality, security, and a future to this land is finally possible. This is a historic achievement for our region. The cleanup of this massive landfill hidden underground, which for years has been an open wound, has finally been completed. Special and well-deserved thanks go to General Vadalà, the Municipal Police, and the local journalists who, with courage, thorough investigations, and constant monitoring of the area, have broken down the wall of silence and brought this immense devastation to light."
