Death of a 24-year-old autistic man in Pozzuoli
Pozzuoli – The judicial investigation will shed full light on the tragic death of Ruslan, a 24-year-old man with autism spectrum disorder, who died after falling from the third floor of a private care facility accredited by the National Health Service in Pozzuoli. Although the case is currently being treated as a presumed suicide, the family disagrees with this reconstruction and is urging that any responsibility in the young man's care and supervision be determined.
Yana Matvieieva, Ruslan's mother and a resident of Qualiano, reconstructed the initial, frantic stages of the tragedy. She said she received an emergency call from the center and rushed to the scene, where the facility's owner took her aside to inform her of the tragedy: her son had died instantly despite resuscitation efforts.
"Ruslan was so sweet, a puppy with the memory of a computer. Even when he was having moments of aggression, he always apologized right afterward," the woman recalled with deep emotion to TgR Campania.
The family's concerns center in particular on the safety protocols the 24-year-old was supposed to be subjected to. Ruslan, a 24-hour resident at the facility, was entitled to enhanced care with the presence of two dedicated staff. "Where were the staff? Why didn't they chase him and stop him?" his mother asks.
The issue of the video surveillance systems also raised further concerns: the cameras that could have captured the events were found to be non-functional, a decision the facility justified with alleged reasons related to privacy and the protection of the operators' work.
The young man's body has been placed under judicial seizure. An autopsy, scheduled for Friday, will clarify the medical-legal aspects of the fall before the body is released, allowing the family to hold a funeral.
The woman is assisted by the lawyer Sergio Pisani and supported by the association "La Battaglia di Andrea," which has been at the forefront for years protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
"The mother wonders why her son was left alone, considering he should have had personal therapists both day and night," the lawyer explains. "It will be essential to thoroughly verify the care arrangements, the organization of supervision, and accurately reconstruct the entire sequence of events to provide clear answers to a family devastated by grief."
The incident has also deeply shocked the community of Qualiano, the boy's hometown. Mayor Raffaele De Leonardis expressed the institutions' sympathy to the family:
This is another piece of news you never want to hear: a young life cut short and a family devastated by grief that also turns to anger at the circumstances of the tragedy. As a parent, I understand the reasons behind a mother's demand for the full truth; as mayor, I have already assured her of my full availability to support her. I am certain that law enforcement and the judiciary will be able to provide swift and definitive responses to this necessary request for justice.
