Tragedy struck the port of Termoli, where a van crashed into the sea in the early afternoon, killing the driver. The victim was identified after the vehicle was recovered: a street fruit vendor, originally from Naples and resident in Montenero di Bisaccia.
The alarm was raised shortly after 13 p.m., when some workers on the dock saw the vehicle crash into the waters of the port with a person at the wheel and immediately called 112.
The Port Authority and the Fire Brigade responded to the scene with several teams and vehicles, including two jet skis. Divers from the Teramo Unit also arrived to assist, transported by helicopter.
The search and recovery operations were coordinated by the Coast Guard. A crane was also dispatched from the Isernia Fire Department to recover the van.
Once the vehicle was brought back to the dock, rescuers found the driver lifeless inside the vehicle. There was nothing more they could do for the man.
The body was transferred and laid out in the morgue of the San Timoteo Hospital in Termoli. The victim's family, along with friends and acquaintances, were present during the recovery operations. The cause of the van's fall into the harbor waters remains unclear.
