Six people were killed in a stampede at the "Lanterna Azzurra" nightclub in Madonna del Piano di Corinaldo, in the province of Ancona. According to some witnesses, the cause was the use of pepper spray. The victims were five minors (two boys and three girls) and the mother of a young girl who was there with her husband to accompany her daughter. At least a thousand people were packed into the large venue, having come to hear a concert by Sfera Ebbasta, a trapper popular with young people. In addition to the victims, the injured were also very young. Approximately 35 people were injured, 12 of them seriously, some in life-threatening conditions. Doctors diagnosed injuries and crushing trauma. Panic spread between midnight and 1:00 a.m., before the concert began. Some of the injured admitted to Torrette Hospital reported smelling a pungent odor and rushing toward one of the emergency doors, only to find it barred. Some bouncers reportedly told them to return inside the club, but at that point the crowd veered sideways toward a low wall, where dozens of people fell. Those who fell under the others were crushed to death. According to initial reconstructions, the club has three emergency exits: one of them leads to a small bridge that crosses a small ditch and connects the nightclub to the parking lot. The tragedy occurred at that point: when the youths ran out of the club, dozens of them crowded together to cross the small bridge until a railing gave way. The first youths thus ended up in the ditch, a meter below the bridge, and were crushed by all the others. The firefighters and 118 ambulances, the Carabinieri who are conducting the investigation, the Ancona Police Chief Oreste Capocasa, the Fire Brigade Commander Dino Poggiali, and the Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri Cristian Carrozza responded to the scene. Efforts are underway to reconstruct the events and identify who may have used the pepper spray, likely without considering the potentially tragic consequences of their actions.
